Here are a few of the plastic items that were used for the creation of the compositions. The plastic is cleaned, cut, drilled and it is used for embroidery with plastic twine.
Mend
The pandemic has been a time for reflection. I have been trying to deal with chaos and confusion with creative small acts of repair.
"Mend" is still in progress. When completed, it will be a series of 28 chosen circular pieces of embroidery on discarded plastic. The lunar cycle comes to mind as a way to measure time as the pandemic progresses. It also is a grim reminder of the impact of plastic on hormonal functions.
I had time to think about my art practice. My commitment to sustainability in making art is more important than ever. The intense stitching on discarded plastic is a symbolic gesture of repair.
I have made over 30 circles so far and the series is growing. Each one measures 22" x 22". I have been using found rigid plastic (storage box lids, plant pots, barrels) and masonry twine for the embroidery. The pieces can be hung on walls, indoors or outdoors in a variety of configurations.
Perhaps if we start with mending small things we can have the courage to fix our broken world.
